oe Ely began his musical career as an outlaw. As part of the seminal alternative country outfit the Flatlanders, also featuring Jimmie Dale Gilmore and Butch Hancock, Ely laid the groundwork for the alt-country craze of the 1990's. By the mid-1970's the Flatlanders had gone their separate ways but Ely continued to record Gilmore and Hitchcock penned tunes on his on solo records. Re-locating to Austin, Texas he was signed by MCA and recorded cutting edge country that was far outside the mainstream, "Countrypolitan" sound being mass-produced in Nashville. A string of critically successful MCA releases followed. In 1982 Ely had the distinction of being chosen as the opening act for the Clash' European tour. MCA dropped Ely in 1983 but he kept at it, slugging it out on countless club tours and writing a large backlog of songs. MCA resigned Ely in 1998 and his current band features such eclectic touches as a pedal steel player and a flamenco guitarist. Joe Ely plays and endorses Washburn acoustic/electric guitars.
